The Philippines' Globe Telecom has teamed up with WhatsApp to offer free mobile messaging for customers on the operator's prepaid and postpaid plans.
Customers on Globe's postpaid plans or prepaid promotional plans will be able to use WhatsApp's messaging and VoIP calling functions without any data charges.
WhatsApp also launched the new WhatsApp calling feature to allow users to make or accept calls or to decline or respond by sending a message.
“WhatsApp is a leading global messaging company, and we are very excited to announce our partnership with them, which coincides with the global introduction of the new WhatsApp calling feature,” Globe senior advisor for consumer business group Dan Horan said.
“With [this promotion], users can enjoy free calls, texts and photo sharing with other WhatsApp users anywhere in the world without worrying about their data charges or the need to look for Wi-Fi spots.”
Globe also currently offers free access to Facebook on its promotional plans. Rival Smart recently teamed up with Facebook to extend Internet.org to the Philippines.
Analysts are recommending that operators explore new ways to collaborate with OTT providers amid the changing competitive landscape.
