Allahuddien Paleker, a proud product of Rylands, Cape Town, has achieved a remarkable milestone in his umpiring career—earning a prestigious spot in the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Umpires for the 2025-26 season.

The 47-year-old's selection is not only a personal triumph but a proud moment for the South African cricket community, underscoring his years of dedication, skill, and unwavering commitment to the craft. This accolade serves as a testament to the exceptional work ethic and the rich family legacy that has shaped his journey.
Paleker’s career trajectory is a true reflection of perseverance. Starting his umpiring journey in 2006, he joined the first-class panel in 2009, and after 16 years of honing his skills, he is now among just 12 umpires worldwide who have earned a coveted place on the Elite Panel. The road to this pinnacle was neither easy nor short, but Paleker's steadfast determination and passion for the game have seen him rise to the highest ranks of international umpiring.
It’s an honour to be named in the elite panel, and this moment is truly significant in my umpiring career. Being selected brings with it a sense of pride and responsibility. I’m confident that my experience across all formats will help me perform at this top level.
Reflecting on his journey, Paleker said:
I started umpiring in 2006 and got onto the first-class panel in 2009, so getting onto the Elite Panel sixteen years after standing in my first first-class game is a lot of time on the feet and away from home. I'm just glad all the hard work has paid off.
Paleker’s success is not only a personal achievement but also a testament to the support system he has built around him. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to those who helped him reach this point, acknowledging the backing of his family, friends, mentors, and organizations like Cricket South Africa and the ICC.
A special thanks to my wife. She has been with me every step of this incredible journey. Her sacrifices, support, and patience have been my pillar of strength.
His passion for umpiring was initially sparked by his family’s rich involvement in the sport. Paleker's father, Jamalodien ‘JC’ Paleker, and his uncle, Hassan ‘Barlow’ Paleker, both served as esteemed umpires, offering invaluable mentorship along the way.
To my father, Jamalodien, who was also an umpire—he has been my inspiration and role model. His teachings have guided me to this stage, and I am forever grateful for the foundation he laid.

His playing days also saw him represent Western Province and play alongside cricketing legends like AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis, and Dale Steyn in the Northerns Titans squad. However, it was his passion for officiating that ultimately led him to the international stage.
His umpiring journey gained significant momentum after he officiated his first T20 International in 2018, followed by his debut One-Day International in 2019 and a Test match in 2020. However, it was his standout performance at the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies that propelled him into the global spotlight.
My big break came last year when I went to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. I had a really good tournament there, and that obviously put me on the map. With the Elite Panel, it’s all about timing, so I didn’t put too much pressure on myself. I told myself to control what I can control and see what happens.
This achievement has significantly accelerated his career trajectory, with Paleker now eyeing the 2027 ICC Men's 50-over World Cup in South Africa—an ambition he had set for himself and which has come two years ahead of schedule.
My goal was to be involved in the 2027 ICC Men's 50-over World Cup in South Africa, and this has happened two years earlier, which I am quite happy with.

Paleker’s selection to the Elite Panel is a milestone not just for him, but for the entire South African cricket community. His story of hard work, family legacy, and determination serves as an inspiration to aspiring umpires, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds in the sport. As a local from the Cape Flats, his success is a powerful testament to the power of community support and the importance of representation in international sports.
I’m extremely proud to be from the Cape Flats. It’s a tough area, and to see someone from that background rise to the top is a source of great pride for me.
Paleker also credited his extensive experience in domestic cricket for preparing him for the international stage.
International cricket is not a finishing school, and the hard yards have to be done at the provincial level. When I started umpiring, a lot of the international players used to play first-class cricket, and that toughened you as a young umpire.
The valuable lessons Paleker gained during his time officiating domestic matches and the guidance he received from mentors like Adrian Holdstock were crucial to his growth. Paleker recalled a pivotal piece of advice from Holdstock in 2015 when he felt frustrated with his progress.
Adrian told me to be patient and control what I can control, and the rest will take care of itself. Since adopting that mindset, everything has fallen into place.
ICC Chair Jay Shah expressed his confidence in Paleker’s ability to thrive at the elite level, saying:
Being an elite official brings with it scrutiny and pressure, but we are confident that Allahuddien possesses the temperament, experience, and skill to deliver consistently at this very top level.
With his place on the ICC Elite Panel secured, Paleker’s future is bright. His journey, built on the foundation of family support, hard work, and years of experience, serves as an inspiration to aspiring umpires worldwide. The Cape Town native’s rise to the top of the umpiring world underscores the power of persistence and community, proving that dreams can be realized with passion, dedication, and the right guidance.
