Donna Vekic has struggled recently and was not much in contention when she faced world number 18 Kudermetova. Kudermetova deserves credit for making the Russian sweat a little, but in the end, she won her opening in straight sets.

Kudermetova, who came into this tournament with a 17-9 win-loss record on hard courts, dispatched Vekic 7-5, 6-3 in an hour and 33 minutes to advance to round two.

Kudermetova, who came into this event after two subpar results in WTA 1000 tournaments in Canada and Cincinnati, maintained her serve throughout the match. She faced 0 break-points and won 85% of her first serve points and 63% of her second serve points.

And, after failing to break Vekic in the 10th game of the first set, she seized the first opportunity she had in the 12th.

Kudermetova swiftly closed things up after taking a second break in the fourth game of the second set. Given her current form, the world number 97 may find it tough to stop her.

Maryna Zanevska

It took Zanevska an hour and a half to beat Coco Vandeweghe, and she should be overjoyed since this is her maiden win in the main draw of the US Open, and just her second at any Grand Slam.

Zanevska was the 6/4 favourite to win this match, but the way she started did not give the impression that she was the underdog.

Zanevska won the first set with a break of service in the second game and a consolidation with a second one in the sixth.

Even when she wasn't receiving those breaks, as she did for most of the second set, Zanevska defended brilliantly, saving two set points in the 10th game. In the 11th game, she broke Vandeweghe and served out the match to love.

This was Zanevska's second main draw victory on hard courts this year.
