Adrian Mannarino hoped to be ready for the US Open after winning in Winston-Salem, but he was unable to do so. Brouwer was able to take advantage of the French player's sluggishness most of the time.
A player who can serve and play effectively, the Dutch took most of his opportunity in this match, defeating Mannarino in straight sets. That was especially important for him because he didn't want Mannarino to re-enter the match. He served efficiently and was a great player from the baseline.
It's all he can do before waiting to see if it's enough. Much more will be needed against Musetti but if he finds him weary like Mannarino he can win.
It's a fantastic opportunity for Brouwer, who is striving to break into the top 100. A third-round performance here would be a major step in the right way. His record of 43-22 on the year demonstrates how far he has come.
Lorenzo Musetti
Lorenzo Musetti required nearly five hours to overcome David Goffin in a gruelling encounter in which both players struggled to maintain their top level due to exhaustion. Neither player wanted to play that long, but there was little separation, therefore the match concluded in a tiebreak.
It wasn't a particularly high-quality match, since neither player performed especially well. Both had significantly more errors than wins, but it all added up to a tight match that Musetti won in the fourth set. This year, the Italian has made significant development and has begun to win matches.
He won in Hamburg against Alcaraz, and he aims to end the season well on the hard courts. It's an area of the game that needs a lot of work, but games like these will give him confidence that he can succeed.
Musetti has a 30-20 record, but a third round here would be even better.
