Alison Riske-Amritraj
Riske had gone into her second-round match as a 1/2 favourite to smash Maria Camila Osorio Serrano after a simple first round win over American wildcard entrant Eleana Yu.
And when she won the first set following three service breaks in the opening three games of the match, everything seemed to be going according to plan.
Osorio Serrano, on the other hand, survived an early break of serve to force a tie-breaker, which she won with her second set-point. And when Osorio Serrano broke Riske twice in the second set to serve for a 5-1 lead, the writing appeared to be on the wall.
Except it wasn't, as Riske broke back twice and then missed four opportunities to break for a third time to win the match before repelling her opponent in the next 10-point tiebreaker.
Can Riske now match her best-ever performance at the US Open, which occurred in 2013?
Xiyu Wang
For the second time in a row, Xiyu was a set behind in her match, but for the second time in a row, she overcame that to win three sets.
What made it even more amazing was that the victory came against Greek number one and world number three Maria Sakkari, who was defeated 3-6, 7-5, 7-5. The game lasted two and a half hours and 45 minutes.
Xiyu, who entered the match with 7/2 odds to win, backed up her performances in the Washington Open and the Granby Open with another strong showing here.
Sakkari had a chance to win the match in the final when she broke to take a 3-1 lead, but she lost her serve, and Wang secured it at 5-6 on the Greek's serve.
Despite being rated 75th in the world, Xiyu's form has been everything but typical of someone in that position. The Chinese player is expected to put on a show here.
