Serena Williams
40-year-old King Richard’s daughter who has won the US Open six times had to face a tough battle to overcome a stubborn Danka Kovinic in the first round. Williams served excellently using her big serve to notch ‘get-out-of-jail' aces whenever she got into trouble. With a first serve percentage of 63% and a win on first serve percentage of 76%, Williams kept Kovinic at bay on Arthur Ashe. The crowd bayed and cheered every Williams shot shadowing her as she secured a 6-3, 6-3 win. Over the year, Williams has played very little winning only two games all season and losing three. The US Open is her swan song as a professional player but the Queen of Tennis expects to go out on her terms.
Anett Kontaveit
The world number two from Estonia comes into this second-round match after annihilating Jacqueline Cristian. Kontaveit’s season took off very early in the year with successes at St Petersburg, Doha and Stuttgart. After February, her form took a nosedive, a situation she blamed on Covid-19. She has struggled at the Grand Slams this year, not progressing beyond the second round in any of them. Despite her struggles, she has risen in the rankings and is now seeded second at the US Open.
Expert Betting Skills
Williams is the underdog in this match-up due to her lack of activity in the past several months. In her last five matches, the Estonian has two wins losing to players like Jill Teichmann and Zhang Shuai. However, at 26, Kontaveit is experienced enough to not be intimidated by the New York crowd. She will be confident of beating a Serena that is out of sorts and looks like she has moved on from Tennis. Several times in her first-round match, Serena was bailed out by her serve. Against Kontaveit, she will need to depend on her overall game as relying on aces may not be enough. Kontaveit’s service was poor in her first-round bow. At just over 50% first serve percentage, she must up her service game if she still wants to hang around the Big Apple. We pick Kontaveit to win in straight sets as we think she will rise to the big occasion.
