The Spaniard was knocked out of Wimbledon after the first round, losing in three sets to Alexander Zverev. And just last week, Roberto got right to it and took home the trophy at the Braunschweig, Germany Challenger tournament. In the final, he performed confidently and defeated van de Zandschulp. He then knocked out Molleker, Klein, Garin, and Herbert. It's worth mentioning that Carballes Baena's favorite type of court is clay, like most of his compatriots.

The Russian played three matches at Wimbledon, beating Cerundolo and Machac but ultimately losing to Arthur Fils in five sets. Before the grass season started, Roman participated in a few clay tournaments. He lost to Djokovic in the second round in Monte Carlo, Bautista-Agut in Barcelona, Wild in Madrid, Moutet in Rome, and Lajovic at Roland Garros. To sum up, Safiullin has only one win with five losses on clay in 2024 at ATP tournaments.

We think Roman is a bit overrated. Safiullin played much better than he did at Wimbledon, but it's worth noting that Roberto was unlucky with the draw. If Safiullin had fallen to Zverev in the first round, he would hardly have made it to the third round, either. Plus, the Spaniard doesn't like grass courts, and Roman isn't a strong ground player, given the Russian's 2024 stats on clay courts. Also, Roberto has good playing practice on clay. Remember, Carballés Baena won a tournament in Germany on this surface last week.
