In his first group tie, Nadal faced Taylor Fritz. Both players held their serves well in the first set, but the Spaniard did face three break points in a number of his service games. In the subsequent tie-break, the American emerged victorious to capture the set.
Fritz won the match 7-6 (3), 6-1 in the second set after losing just one point in the first. The 25-year-old made a winning debut, while Nadal's first appearance here in two years ended in defeat.
Felix Auger Aliassime
Felix Auger-Aliassime, making his ATP Finals debut, began his campaign against Casper Ruud. In the opening set, which went to a tie-break, neither player had a sniff of a break point. In it, the Norwegian edged out his opponent to win the set.
Both players started the second set brightly, but it was Auger-Aliassime who faltered first, dropping serve in the seventh game to trail 4-3. Ruud served out the match after another three of games to upset the Canadian 7-6 (4), 6-4.
