Novak Djokovic began his Monte Carlo campaign with a three-set triumph against Philipp Kohlschreiber after receiving a bye into the second round. It wasn't a match reminiscent of Djokovic's normal polished performances in which he easily defeats his opponents in straight sets.
Nonetheless, he earned a much-needed victory here and advances to the third round. Following his surprising triumph in the Australian Open, he went on to lose early in the Indian Wells and Miami Masters against Kohlschreiber and Roberto Bautista Agut, respectively.
The Serbian cyborg has never advanced past the quarterfinals in his last three appearances in Monte Carlo. Last year, he was eliminated in the third round, which he hopes not to repeat this year.
Taylor Harry Fritz
The 21-year-old American has put in one of his greatest performances of the season. Fritz's third round run here is only the third time he has accomplished such a feat.
In his first match, he overcame Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets, and he subsequently defeated Diego Schwartzman in straight sets. The last time anything like this happened was at the Australian Open, when he was knocked out in the third round by Roger Federer.
Since then, he has won the Newport Beach Challenger, but his form has suffered as a result, and he has lost his opening matches in all of the subsequent ATP tournaments in which he has competed.

This is an obvious choice. Despite his recent struggles with form, Djokovic should have no trouble getting past the inexperienced American. This match will be a learning experience for Fritz, who will be competing against one of the best players on the tour right now.
