On Wednesday, October 12, fifth seed Tommy Paul of the United States will face Spain's Nicolas Alvarez Varona in the second round of the 2022 Gijon Open.

Nicolas Alvarez Varona, a local favorite, fought back from a set down to overcome fellow qualifier Marco Trungelliti in the first round to earn his maiden tour-level victory.
The Argentine outplayed Alvarez Varona in the first set, but he rallied over the next two sets to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 in an hour and 46 minutes.
The 21-year-old Spaniard, ranked no. 231, converted 4 of 5 break points and saved 6 of 8 to progress to the next round.
Alvarez Varona, who made his debut in Barcelona this year, improved his overall season record to 21-28.
In the first qualifying round, he overcame fellow Spaniard Oriol Roca Batalla 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, and then in the second qualifying round, he defeated Italy's Lorenzo Giustino 6-2, 6-2.

Paul surged past the Spanish wild card in the second set after winning the first. He needed only two games on his serve and seven on his return to win the set in 29 minutes and the match 6-3, 6-0. Paul faced no break points during the match and won 85% of the points on his first delivery.
This season, the 25-year-old, who won the Stockholm Open last year, is 34-23. This year, his highest finish was a semifinal at Delray Beach.
