Lorenzo Sonego
Sonego is making his sixth appearance in the main draw in New York, and he has failed to go past the second round.
Although most Italians prefer clay, Sonego is like to his compatriot Matteo Berrettini in that he can play on all three surfaces - he has reached finals on all three and won on both grass and clay.
Two of those finals were in 2021, but he has not been in that kind of form this year, and he has only won once on the senior tour since reaching the third round of Wimbledon, and that was earlier this week in Winston Salem, where he beat Alejandro Tabilo of Chile before losing in three sets to American Maxime Cressy.
Jordan Thompson
Thompson reached the fourth round of the US Open two years ago, his highest Grand Slam performance, but after starting 2022 with a singles ranking of 75, he struggled in the first half of the year, and it wasn't until he came to grass that he regained any type of form.
He won the Surbiton Challenger event, his first tournament victory in four years, and finished second in Nottingham.
His Wimbledon journey, though, was cut short in the second round by Stefanos Tsitsipas.
He's had more success on the Challenger circuit since then, reaching the quarterfinals of events in Chicago and Granby (Canada).
Expert Betting Tips
Neither guy has been in great shape leading up to this event, and Thompson has a superior record in this tournament. Sonego, on the other hand, will attempt to demonstrate that the discrepancy in global rankings is justified.
