To advance a set, Kanepi outlasted Osaka in the tiebreak. Prior to her regrettable retirement due to a back injury, Osaka jumped up to a quick 3-0 lead in the second set.
Kanepi is participating in the competition after a 12-year hiatus. The victory in the first round raised her season record to 25–12.
The four-time tour-level champion who lost in the Australian Open quarterfinals this year will be attempting to maintain her strong performance into the next round.
Surely A Frustrating Season for Muguruza
The eighth-ranked player in the world, Garbine Muguruza, has had a bad season. After a remarkable 42-17 season last year that concluded with the WTA Finals championship, there were great hopes for the Spaniard this year.
The two-time Grand Slam champion's most recent match was at Wimbledon this year, when she lost to Greet Minnen in the opening round and was eliminated. She was scheduled to compete in San Jose last week, but an ailment forced her to withdraw before the competition ever began.
She will be anxious to get off to a strong start, but neither her performance in the past nor her tournament track record are promising. The 10-time tour-level winner fell in the second round on three times, including last year, but made it to the quarterfinals in 2017.
