Jannik Sinner vs Daniil Medvedev Prediction, Betting Tips and Odds | 28 JANUARY 2024

It's that time of the year when the best players face each other for one of the most prestigious titles of a tennis player’s career. The Australian Open final is upon us and two familiar names have made it through several rounds to make it to the final. Novak Djokovic remains the male tennis Player with most Australian Open titles to his name, and he was once again the favorite to get into this year's final, but he lost in the semifinal round against Jannik Sinner. And Daniil Medvedev is another popular name to make it to the final stage for his back-to-back finals in 2021 and 2022 editions of the tournament. So, it's Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev going head-to-head for the title in the Final of the Australian Open 2024.

Jannik Sinner sits at number 4 on the ATP ranking at the moment. The 22 year old Italian turned pro in 2018 and since then has won 10 singles titles. He played in his first Australian Open in 2020 and couldn't make it past the 2nd round. Then in 2021, he crashed out in the 1st round before making it to the Quarter Final of the 2022 Australian Open. Then last year 2023, he crashed out in the 4th round but made it to the final this year.

He had an incredible run in this year's tournament up until the final beating 5 of his 6 opponents in straight sets. In the semifinals, he defeated world number 1 Novak Djokovic, as he won in 4 sets with a 1:6,2:6,7:6,3:6 score. His stats against Djokovic were: 9 aces, 1 double fault, 53/64 first serve points won, 29/46 second serve points won, 5 break points converted, 24 games won and a total of 128 points won.

After his emphatic victory over Djokovic, Jannik Sinner had this to say “Awesome. I don’t know what to say really. I came here after a couple of exhibition matches at Kooyong and came here as prepared as possible,” Sinner said. “The confidence from end of last year has for sure kept the belief that I can play against the best players in the world and I’m really happy that I can play Sunday my first final.”

Daniil Medvedev is another player that truly deserves his place in the final of the tournament. The world number 3 player has had quite an interesting experience at the Australian Open since his first appearance in 2017. Since then, he's qualified for the tournament every year and he made it to the 4th round twice in 2019 and 2020, before playing in the finals in 2020 and 2021. He lost both finals and couldn't make it past the 3rd round in last year's edition. And here he is once more in the final this year for the 3rd time.

Daniil Medvedev had an interesting journey to the final but no round was as intriguing as the semifinal round when he came from behind to defeat Alexander Zverev 3:2. He lost the opening 2 sets 5:7,3:6. But he was determined to fight back and he did and got rewarded with a 7:6,7:6,6:3 win in the final 3 sets of the game. His stats throughout the game were: 14 aces, 6 double faults, 72/94 first serve points, 35/62 second serve points, 5/10 break points saved, 4 break points converted, 2 tie breaks, 28 games won and 121 points won in total.

At the end of the victory Daniil Medvedev said “I was a little bit lost but then in the third set I kept saying to myself, 'if I lose this match then I want to be proud of myself',” said Medvedev, who also came from two sets down in the second round.

“If I lose, I lose, but I won so I am very proud.

“In the third set I felt like I was tired physically. I knew I couldn’t run for 40 shots like in the first set, so I said 'let’s get more aggressive'.

“I started to serve better and then at five-all in the (fourth-set) tiebreak I got a little lucky – the slice was intentional but the drop shot (return) with backspin into the wind … was not. Sometimes you get lucky, and today was my day.”

Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner had played against each other on 9 different occasions. Daniil Medvedev won 6 times while Jannik Sinner won 3 times.

Congratulations to both players and they have truly deserved their place in the final. Daniil Medvedev was one lucky man in the semifinal against Alexander Zverev. He has shown repeatedly that his strength becomes evident at the extremes of the game. But losing the opening 2 sets is just inexcusable. And Jannik Sinner has been a wonder this year and especially at the Australian Open. How he handled Novak Djokovic in the semifinal round just tells you how good he is at the moment. And winning in straight sets in 5 out of 6 games in the tournament? That's just insane.

So, between these two, the obvious favorite is Jannik Sinner. Expect him to start strong and take down Medvedev piece by piece. Unfortunately, I don't think Daniil will dare a comeback against Sinner. If he loses the opening set against Sinner, then he’s done!!
