Grigor Dimitrov had a good start to the Paris Masters, defeating the Netherlands' Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets on Tuesday to advance to the second round.
The Bulgarian, who reached the Paris semifinals in 2017, required one hour and 56 minutes to defeat the Dutch player 7-6 (7-5), 7-6. (7-5).
Van de Zandschulp took the early break in both sets, but the Bulgarian reclaimed it each times, finally winning the sets in tiebreaks.
Dimitrov, an eight-time tour champion, is coming off a strong performance in Vienna last week. He overcame Andrey Rublev and Marcos Giron on his way to the semifinals, but Daniil Medvedev stopped him from reaching his first final since 2018.
He came close to reaching a 16th final twice in 2022, but was halted in the semifinals at Monte-Carlo and Melbourne.
The former no. 3, who climbed four spots to no. 28 this week, is in fantastic form and will be expecting to keep winning in the second round.
Fabio Fognini
Fabio Fognini earned his vengeance on world no. 308 Arthur Fils in two hours and 37 minutes, defeating the French qualifier 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (4-7), 6-2.
Fognini, who was also in the qualifiers, lost the second qualifying round against Fils 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, allowing the Frenchman to join the main draw as a qualifier and Fognini to enter as a fortunate loser.
Fognini, on the other hand, ruined the 18-year-tour-level old's debut by defeating him in three sets. In the 12th game of the opening set, Fognini saved a set point on his serve before winning the subsequent tiebreak.
The Italian battled back from a break down twice in the second set, but was outplayed in the tiebreak as Fils leveled the match. The 35-year-old then broke twice in the final set to go to the round of 16.
Fognini, who is competing in the Paris Masters for the tenth time, has only made it to the third round once. Will he succeed for the second time this year?
Expert Betting Tips
Dimitrov is the superior player right now. He is coming off a fantastic run in Vienna, where he defeated a quality opponent in the first round. Fognini, on the other hand, has struggled recently and will find it tough to bridge the gap on the Bulgarian.
