Francisco Cerundolo, World No. 29, is one of the tour's emerging stars, with a 23-20 win-loss record this season. After placing second at the Argentina Open last year, the 24-year-old won his first victory at Bastad in July. At addition to winning the Santa Cruz Challenger, he made the last four in Rio de Janeiro, Miami, and Hamburg.
However, after reaching the semi-finals in Hamburg, the kid has gone on a seven-match losing run. He ultimately broke it earlier this month in Gijon, where he lost in the quarterfinals.
Cerundolo arrived in Vienna after being eliminated in the Round of 16 in Antwerp. He defeated Filip Misolic 6-3, 6-3 in his first round in Vienna on Monday and will be ready to face Sinner.
Jannik Sinner
Sinner has a 46-14 win-loss record this season, including an Umag championship and three Grand Slam quarterfinal appearances. This season, the 21-year-old has struggled with ailments, preventing him from reaching the heights he may have. It is supported by the fact that the World No. 12 has had to quit or give his opponent a walkover in four events so far.
One painful retirement occurred in the Round of 16 at Roland Garros against Andrey Rublev, while his most recent came in the semifinals of Sofia earlier this month. It was caused by an ankle ailment, which kept him out for several weeks.
This week, the Italian returned to action in Vienna. On Wednesday, he defeated Cristian Garin 6-3, 6-2 in his first encounter after returning from injury.
