Murray will compete in the US Open after losing in the third round of the Cincinnati Masters to compatriot Cameron Norrie. This season, he has 20 victories and 14 defeats.
Francisco Cerundolo has 20 victories and 14 defeats, mirroring Murray's record. Cerundolo has made a name for himself this season. Following a few Challenger tournaments, the 24-year-first old's important tour-level success came at the Argentina Open, when he reached the quarterfinals before losing to fellow countryman Diego Schwartzman. The next week, he was defeated by Schwartzman in the Rio Open quarterfinals.
The Argentine cruised to his first Masters 1000 semifinal at the Miami Open. He then had a string of bad performances leading up to the Swedish Open, when he won his first ATP championship by defeating compatriot Sebastian Baez in the final. He also advanced to the semifinals of the German Open before being defeated by eventual champion Lorenzo Musetti.
Andy Murray
Andy Murray, the former US Open champion, will face 24th seed Francisco Cerundolo in the first round of the US Open on Monday.
Andy Murray has had somewhat of a comeback this year. The British player was ranked World No. 134 when the season began, but he has already moved up to World No. 49.
Murray began the season on a high note by reaching the finals of the Sydney International, his first final appearance since 2019. He was unable to defeat Aslan Karatsev in the final match, and therefore missed out on a 47th career championship.
Following that, the 35-year-old suffered a string of second-round defeats. He reached the semifinals of the Surbiton Challenger on grasscourt after missing the clay season (save for the Madrid Open) but was defeated by Denis Kudla. The next week, Murray reached his second final of the year at the Stuttgart Open, but was defeated by Matteo Berrettini.
The former World No. 1 also advanced to the Hall of Fame Championships quarterfinals, but was unable to beat Alexander Bublik.
