Number one seed Felix Auger-Aliassime found himself in trouble after a good start to his first match in Florence, but he ended strong to upset Oscar Otte in three sets and move to the quarterfinals.
The Canadian beat the German 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2 in two hours and 30 minutes. He gained the lone break in the first set before blowing a 3-1 lead in the second, allowing the world no. 55 to fight back and win the set in a tiebreak.
Auger-Aliassime stepped up his game in the fourth set, breaking the German twice and winning the match.
This is the 13th time this year that the World No. 13 has made it to the last eight. He has a 42-25 season record and is going for his second career championship. This season, he won his first title in Rotterdam. In Marseille, the 22-year-old reached his tenth ATP final but was runner-up for the ninth time.
On Friday, he will seek to improve his 24-12 hard court record by reaching his sixth quarterfinal of the season.
Brandon Nakashima
Brandon Nakashima, the eighth seed, advanced to the round of 16 with an easy win over Turkey's Altug Celikbilek in round two.
The American, who had defeated Richard Gasquet in the first round 6-2, 6-2, required only an hour and 15 minutes to defeat the Turkish player 6-3, 6-4.
While Nakashima did not face a single break point in the first round, he did face one in the second and was unable to save it, but he converted three of five break points.
This season, the 29-year-old World No. 46 is 29-20, with the majority of his victories coming on his favorite hard courts. He recently won his first professional title in San Diego and may be a difficult opponent to beat.
