Evgeniya Rodina defeated number 27 seed Martina Trevisan 7-5, 6-1 in her first competitive match in over three years.

The match lasted an hour and 43 minutes, with the 33-year-old Russian triumphing due to Trevisan's 43 unforced mistakes to her 22. Rodina was still rusty on the winners' side, as she could only manage eight against her opponent's 24.

Of course, a victory is a win, but Evgeniya cannot expect such a kind, carefree performance from Tomljanovic, who has been on a roll lately on the tour.

Rodina is a former World No. 67 who is still on the hunt for her first WTA singles championship. Her most recent final was the Indian Wells Challenger doubles in March 2019, when she teamed up with Kristyna Pliskova.

Ajla Tomljanovic, world No. 46, gets off to a flying start in the US Open 2022, defeating Karolina Muchova 6-3, 7-6. (5).

The 29-year-old came in New York after a thrilling quarterfinal performance at the Cincinnati Open, her first in a WTA 1000 tournament. Ajla began as a qualifier and defeated Clara Tauson, Nuria Parrizas Diaz, Taylor Townsend, Paula Badosa, and Veronika Kudermetova.

She has previously advanced to the second round of the qualifications in Toronto.

Tomljanovic, a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon this year and a few other WTA 250 events, has had a somewhat better season, with a record of 29-20.

Rodina is unlikely to overtake Tomljanovic, who has been in far better form than Trevisan recently. This match is expected to be won easily by Australia.
