Thiem's season in 2021 was cut short due to a wrist injury. He competed in a Challenger tournament in March of this year, but lost in the first round. He subsequently moved on to the ATP tour, where he lost six consecutive first-round matches.

Thiem then played in the Salzburg Challenger, where he overcame Filip Misolic in his first match of the year before losing in the second round. After that, he advanced to the quarterfinals of the Swedish Open, the Kitzbuhel Open, and the semifinals of the Swiss Open.

The Austrian's return to the US Open was cut short in the first round. He later raced in another Challenger event and finished second. He was eliminated in the second round of both the Moselle Open and the Tel Aviv Open. He then advanced to the semifinals of the Gijon Open, where he was defeated by Andrey Rublev.

He began last week's European Open with victories against Michael Geerts and Francisco Cerundolo. He defeated Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinals with three match points saved before falling to Sebastian Korda in the semifinals.

Tommy Paul is currently having his greatest season of his career. At Wimbledon, he advanced to the fourth round of a Major for the first time. He advanced to the third round of the US Open.

Outside of the Majors, he has reached nine quarterfinals but has only advanced farther once. The Delray Beach Open was his only semifinal appearance. Last month, the American achieved a career-high rating of No. 28. He was the reigning champion at last week's Stockholm Open, however he was eliminated in the second round by Mikael Ymer.

The American's forehand is also quite good, and it will be interesting to see how Thiem's forehand performs in crosscourt exchanges. The former US Open champion appears to be in stronger condition at the moment and should be able to easily beat Paul if he maintains his current level of play.
