Thiem is showing indications of regaining the form he had a few years ago. The Austrian has recently put up some strong performances, most notably reaching the quarterfinals of the Gijon Open. Thiem defeated Joao Sousa, Marcos Giron, and Francisco Cerundolo to reach the last four, where he was defeated in straight sets by eventual champion Andrey Rublev.
He subsequently used a protected ranking to join the European Open in Antwerp, where he faced Michael Geerts in the first round. He defeated the Belgian 6-4, 6-0 to advance to the ATP 250 tournament's Round of 16.
Francisco Cerundolo
Cerundolo has had a successful season thus far, capturing his first career singles championship at the Nordea Open. He also made his first Masters 1000 semifinal appearance at the Miami Masters. The Argentine's results propelled him into the top 30 of the ATP rankings.
Cerundolo's record, however, has dipped in recent months, with first-round exits in the Canadian Open, Western & Southern Open, US Open, and Astana Open. He then advanced to the quarterfinals of the Gijon Open, where he was defeated by Dominic Thiem.
Cerundolo, seeded sixth at the European Open in Antwerp, advanced to the second round after defeating Marc-Andrea Huesler 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-3.
Expert Betting Tips
Cerundolo has a good first serve, but his second serve is a weakness and causes him to double-fault. The Argentine has a daring approach and strikes his strokes with a lot of strength, which leads to unforced errors in important situations.
Thiem appears to be in fantastic form at the moment and should be able to overcome the underperforming Cerundolo to advance to the European Open semifinals.
