Denis Shapovalov will compete in his first competition since placing second to Novak Djokovic at the Paris Masters in 2019.

The lefty is in great shape for the competition, having played in his second season final on Sunday in Vienna. But he couldn't win his first championship of the year after losing in three sets against Daniil Medvedev.

In October, he reached his first season finale, being runner-up to Yoshihito Nishioka at the Korea Open.

Shapovalov has reached at least the quarterfinal round of each of the previous four events, giving him an 11-4 record in his last 15 matches.

Overall this year, the 23-year-old is 32-23, with significant results including a quarterfinal debut at the Australian Open and semifinal finishes in Dubai and Tokyo.

Can he pick up where he left off in his first appearance at the Paris Masters since 2019?

The world has moved on. This year marks Francisco Cerundolo's debut in the Paris Masters.

The 24-year-old Argentine, who prefers clay to other surfaces, surprised everyone earlier this season when he reached his first-ever ATP 1000 semifinal in Miami.

But his run to the Miami semis was a rare hard-court accomplishment for the Argentine, who is 7-8 on hard courts and 3-4 on indoor surfaces this year. His latest performance has been very dismal.

Cerundolo, who won his maiden ATP championship in Bastad earlier this year, and reached the semifinals in Hamburg the following week. However, following those strong performances on clay, he has lost six consecutive matches on hard courts. He broke his run at Gijon, where he won one and lost one match, and then won a match in each of the next two tournaments in Antwerp and Vienna.

Given his current form and track record on the surface, Shapovalov is the favorite to win and should proceed easily.
