Daniil Medvedev, who is now ranked No. 10, will be entering his clay court endeavor at the Madrid Masters. The Russian man has not performed well away with a negative win-loss record of 4-2 in his last six matches, which somewhat prehints him regaining rhythm after that shocking early exit in Australia earlier in the year. In the most recent one, he bulldozed Juan Manuel Cerundolo with a neat display of tennis for a 6-2 6-2 victory, along with 2 aces, 66% of first serves in, 100% break points saved. He converted four break points, typically showing great tactical return awareness. Following many speculations surrounding his future, especially in the aftermath of that shock loss to Learner Tien of the US, the man from Russia ruled out discussing his retirement and firmly stated that his heart is present in the game, fighting for the highest level. He even showed respect towards the next generation with words of praise for Jakub Mensik and Joao Fonseca. Clay that is slightly quicker favors Medvedev concerning his relatively flatter strokes and deep positioning, favoring a blend of aggression and defense. Experience, strategic depth, and a will to re-establish himself favor Medvedev as a clear favorite in this clash against Brandon Nakashima as he looks to gain momentum for the all-important clay season ahead.

At No. 32 on the ATP Tour, Brandon Nakashima has enjoyed a decent 2025 season, as he prepares to play against Daniil Medvedev in Madrid. The American has been experiencing a record of 3-3 in his last six matches, thus showing that he has the most significant breakthroughs combined with some unreliable moments. He had earned his most recent accolade with a straightforward win of 7-5, 6-3 over Flavio Cobolli, in which he greatly impressed with 4 aces, a 73% first-serve percentage, and no double faults. Break-point saving rate of 75% further highlighted the increasing resilience of Nakashima under pressure. Earlier this year, he astonished everyone by making a semifinal run in Acapulco, where he defeated seasoned stalwarts such as David Goffin. The successful run continued as a result of appearing in the fourth round of Indian Wells and having yet another impressive showing in Miami after beating Goffin once again before being stopped by Grigor Dimitrov. These results reaffirm Nakashima's continuous climb and increasing competitiveness at the ATP 500 and Masters levels. While faster hard courts are definitely more comfortable for him, his disciplined baseline game and temper would allow him to adapt on clay if necessary, although his tendencies for aggression could be neutralized by top-tier defenders. While a tough ask going up against Medvedev, Nakashima has shown he can hang tough against elite opponents, making this an interesting test of current levels for the young American.

Daniil Medvedev and Brandon Nakashima have met one time on the ATP Tour, with Medvedev winning that battle 1-0. Their only contest was in Indian Wells 2023, where Medvedev disposed of his opponent with scores of 6-4, 6-3. This clash displayed Medvedev's prowess in absorbing Nakashima's grittiness and counterattack based on both depth and precision. Even on the slower clay of Madrid, with the many fewer chances that Nakashima will receive at piercing through an impenetrable wall of defenses erected by Medvedev. In fact, although Nakashima has improved today since they last faced off, there still remains very huge gaps in terms of experience, shot tolerance, and moving around the court. Medvedev will try to re-formulate his plan: he wants his patience; with deep returns, and really smart position on the court while threatening the opponent.

  • Since 2022, Medvedev has attained an 85% win rate against players ranked outside of the Top 30 on clay. Currently, Nakashima ranks 32nd. Nonetheless, even against players ranked between 30 to 40, Medvedev boasts an impressive 80% win record against them in Masters events.
  • Medvedev defeated Nakashima 6-4, 6-3. This was their only meeting so far and easily covered the -4.5 games mark. Importantly, he broke Nakashima's serve thrice in that match, despite the faster hard court conditions.
  • Nakashima has only won 38% of the matches he played in terms of sets with Top 10 players in Masters 1,000 in his entire career, at least, as of April 2025. This shows that he has a problem keeping up the necessary high intensity for full matches against the best players.
  • In the past 24 months on clay, Medvedev has saved 70% of break points faced, while Nakashima converts only 38% of break points on clay in the same time frame. This disparity in those critical moments heavily favors Medvedev.
  • Four of Medvedev's last five wins on clay have all come in straight sets, with all four matches completed in under 21 total games thereby following the "Under 22.5 Games" trend which we observe here.

Medvedev against Nakashima is going to be a showdown between youth ambition and experience. The advantages for Medvedev are how well he constructs points, defends, and covers the court on clay. Nakashima will need to serve and hit his forehand at his very best if he plans to push Medvedev off balance. But at the end of the day, in a best-of-three match, it is mostly going to come down to Medvedev's superior tactical play and much steadier performance. Madrid's faster clay slightly favors Nakashima's more aggressive style, but it will not completely answer the strategy gap between the two players. Expect Medvedev to control the match from the baseline and pass through it with minimal fuss.
