Daniil Medvedev has had an up and down season. While he won the Australian Open for the second year in a row, he was eliminated in the fourth round of the French and United States Opens.
The Russian, who won four championships in seven finals last year, had a dismal year in the Masters 1000 competitions. He never made it to a single Masters 1000 final. Despite the failures in the major events, Medvedev reached five finals this year, winning titles in Los Cabos and Vienna and as runners-up in the Rosmalen and Halle Opens, as well as the Australian Open.
Another highlight in 2022 for Medvedev? He held the world number one position twice. The 26-year-old dropped to No. 1 in two weeks the first time, but kept it for 11 weeks the second time. He couldn't keep the top rank for long, though, due to some unusual performances.
Medvedev, who is now ranked fifth in the world, enters the season-ending event with a 45-16 record. He has a strong track record at the event, having won it in 2020 by defeating Dominic Thiem and been runner-up to Alexander Zverev last year.
Andrey Rublev
Andrey Rublev is the only player in the Red Group who has never won the ATP Finals. Among the other players in the group, Novak Djokovic has won the tournament five times, Stefanos Tsitsipas won it in 2019, and Daniil Medvedev won it in 2020.
But Rublev is no less competitive than the other three, and he will give it his all in the season's final tournament. The Russian is ranked seventh in the world and has a 49-18 win-loss record this year.
This year, the 12-time tour-level winner reached four finals and won all of them. There was an ATP 500 championship in Dubai, as well as three ATP 250 titles in Marseille, Belgrade, and Gijon. Last month, he won the title in Gijon and advanced to the semifinals in Astana.
He recently won one and lost another in Vienna and Paris.
