Dan Evans overcame Oscar Otte to win his first match in Vienna. In the second round, he faced Karen Khachanov. The match began with three consecutive breaks of service, with the Brit having the upper hand to lead 2-1. He extended his advantage to 3-1 with a hold of serve.

Khachanov held serve once more, and Evans won the first set with a three-game surge. The British player stormed to a 5-1 lead in the second set and went on to win 6-2, 6-2. For the sixth time this year, he has reached the quarterfinals of a competition.

Shapovalov defeated Jurij Rodionov in straight sets to advance to the second round, where he would face fourth seed Taylor Fritz. Last month, the American defeated the Japanese in the semifinals of the Japan Open.

Following a hold of service by Fritz to begin the match, Shapovalov went on to win the first set in six games. The second set was more intense. In the sixth game, the American broke serve to go up 3-2.

At 5-3, Fritz had a pair of set points on his opponent's service but was unable to finish off the match. He was able to serve out the set in the following game to tie the game and force a deciding. In the sixth game of the final set, Shapovalov broke for a 4-2 lead.

The Canadian won the match 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 shortly after that. Shapovalov is in his eighth quarterfinal match of the season and has won three of his previous seven.

Shapovalov is the superior server, so he'll have the advantage there, but Evans has the game to challenge him and put his patience to the test. The Brit is noted for mixing up his strokes effectively to break up the rally's rhythm. This is a contest that might go either way, but the Canadian youth appears to be in better shape and is likely to win.
