Rublev began his career against Daniil Medvedev in the opening group match. He took an early break to go up 3-1 and kept the lead for a time. The 25-year-old then served for the opening set, but was broken. At 6-5, he had a pair of set points on his opponent's serve but couldn't convert.
Rublev took a 6-2 lead in the subsequent tie-break. However, a few expensive blunders by him, along with some good play by Medvedev and incorrect decisions from the linesmen, culminated in the former World No. 1 winning the set.
Rublev did not dwell on his disappointment for long and soon recovered. He won the second set after breaking his opponent's serve twice to force a tiebreak. Both players kept their serves consistent in the third set, which quickly turned into a tie-break.
Rublev was once again the favorite, leading 6-3, but he blew four match points as Medvedev refused to go down without a fight. The 25-year-old eventually won 6-7 (7), 6-3, 7-6 on his fourth match point (7).
Novak Djokovic
Djokovic began his quest for a sixth ATP Finals championship with a match against Stefanos Tsitsipas. He broke the Greek's serve in the first game, and the advantage was more than enough for him to win the first set.
Tsitsipas played a little better in the second set, but he was no match for Djokovic. The pair remained unshakeable on serve as the set progressed to a tie-break, which the Serb won to win the match 6-4, 7-6.
Expert Betting Tips
If Rublev blows another chance to close out sets and the match, he might not get away with it this time. Giving a player like Djokovic a second chance would be disastrous for his chances. The Serb appears to be in good form right now and should be able to pick up another victory to keep his campaign going here.
