In the quarter-finals of the San Diego tennis tournament, world number five Andrey Rublev will face world number 15 Diego Schwartzman. Andrey is quoted as the favourite. Most recently, at the Laver Cup, when the two men met and Rublev was stronger than his opponent, 2-1.
Andrey Rublev’s current form
After the US Open, where Andrey reached the third round, the Russian took a break. Rublev was not back on the court until three weeks later at the Laver Cup, where he played one singles match, beating Schwartzman in three sets. Five days later, he came back to San Diego to take on Nakashima in the second round. Brandon was unable to put up a fight against the world number five, with the American only winning three games against Andrei and the match lasted an hour and three minutes.
I knew Brandon was playing at a good level. It was important for me to seize the initiative straight away. I tried to use my forehand more and controlled the flow of the match. I was getting better with each possession. However, the conditions were not ideal. The bounce here is very high, and I need to get used to it.
Diego Schwartzman’s current form
Unlike Andrey Rublev, Diego Schwartzman played two games in San Diego, knocking out Gaio and Harris. The match against the South African lasted over two hours and was surprisingly gutsy as Lloyd won the first game 6-4. Schwartzman in that game did not serve once on three double faults, winning 72% of points on his first serve and 55% on his second. We must also note the excellent 58% win rate on the opponent’s second serve, which means that the Argentine is now good on the receiving end, which is Diego’s strong point.

The encounter against Schwartzman at the Laver Cup was quite a long one. Andrey won the game victoriously. However, we believe that the upcoming meeting will be less drawn out, and two sets will be enough for the Russian to win. Rublev proved that he is stronger than the Argentine, now there is no need to waste time and energy scouting. Rublev is like an open book for Rublev.
