The match, which lasted two hours and 26 minutes and ended around one in the morning local time, ended with Tomljanovi winning 6-7 (3-7), 6-0, 6-2. After Nick Kyrgios and Alex de Minaur lost in the men's Masters competition, Tomljanovi is the lone Australian left in the Cincinnati singles draws.
Ajla Tomljanovic, the 63rd-ranked player in the world, has been doing far better than her rating would indicate. On Wednesday, she defeated Paula Badosa in a stunning comeback, losing just two games in the final two sets. The 29-year-old recently advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals before losing to eventual winner Elena Rybakina in three sets at SW19, where she came closer than most.
Veronika Kudermetova
After Simona Halep exercised prudence and withdrew from Cincinnati, Veronika Kudermetova, the world's no. 20 player, rode her luck and received a walkover to the round of 16. The 25-year-old has been in the best shape of her career this season, but her three runner-up finishes indicate that confidence may be missing in the final rounds of tournaments. Just last week, she fell to Tomljanovic in Toronto's first round in three sets.
