Last season was a disappointing one for Union. The year before, the Berliners had spent heavily on Champions League football, for which they eventually qualified but were unprepared to fight on two fronts. In the opening round of the Bundesliga season, they suffered nine consecutive defeats, making life extremely difficult for themselves. They gradually began to turn things around, but by the end of the season, they were in trouble again. It was only a victory in the final round that allowed them to maintain their 15th-place finish and, at the same time, secure a place in the Elite Division. In the summer, they have already held four control meetings: they beat Chemi and Dynamo Kyiv - 4:0 and 3:2, drew with Rangers - 4:4, and defeated Lyon - 0:4.
Real Sociedad
Real Sociedad also played in the Champions League last season, even making it to the playoffs, but were beaten by PSG in the round of 16. However, they did pretty well in the Spanish Primera. They may have missed the continent's premier club competition again, but they finished sixth in the league and earned themselves a ticket to the Europa League. In the off-season, San Sebastián lost Robin Le Norman to Atletico, while key signings included Sergio Gomez, Javi Lopez, and Luka Sucic. The Blues and Whites played five matches in pre-season training, beating Tokyo Verdi and Gamba Osaka 2:0 and 1:0, respectively, losing 2:1 to Alaves, 2:1 to Osasuna, and 2:0 to Rennes.
Expert Betting Tips
Union is doing well in friendlies ahead of the new season. Yes, they were beaten 4:0 by Lyon last time out, but before that, they had drawn once and won three times. Here and in the upcoming clash, they have a good chance of at least not losing. Real Sociedad have only won twice in pre-season, both against Asian opposition, and have lost all three of their friendlies with European clubs.
Union had severe problems with results last season, but the performance in matches involving the Berliners was quite good. In pre-season, they continue to delight us with their goal-scoring prowess, having scored and conceded 36 goals in their last seven matches (an average of 5.14 per game) - an unusually high result. Real Sociedad may be more pragmatic, but they can still have a free-flowing encounter.
