Gareth Southgate’s side was just a few penalties away from ending their 55 years of hurt in the European Championship, but they suffered a dreadful defeat to Italy in the finals at their home ground, a defeat that still hunts them today. They were exceptional in the 2022 World Cup, being eliminated by France in the quarter-finals, and with the numerous talents at Southgate’s disposal, his only goal is to bring the trophy home. Gareth Southgate has often been judged by his recent failures at the 2020 Euros and the 2022 World Cup but his style and passion for young players continue to set him apart. His starting formation was always the 4-3-3, but one that was very flexible and easy enough to convert to the 4-2-3-1, especially with the advent of young guns like Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden playing from the flank. Gareth Southgate took charge of the national team in November 2016 following a successful spell as interim manager after the departure of Sam Allardyce.
He qualified the Three Lions to Russia 2018 with a game in hand while also taking them to the Qatar 2022 World Cup where France eliminated them in the quarter-finals. Let us not forget his remarkable spell in the Euro 2021 finals where he lost to Italy on penalty shootouts. Some pundits argue that Southgate is overhyped and has failed the England national team while some beg to differ but we believe his success in this competition will be career-defining for Southgate.
What about the squad?
England appears to be one of the teams with the finest squad in this competition, if not the team with the best individual players, but can they function well as a team? A closer look at their last two major tournaments; the Euro 2020 and World Cup 2022; shows that Southgate has taken the following split of players in his 26-man squads: Three goalkeepers, nine or ten defenders, five or six midfielders, and eight forwards. This time around, we shouldn’t expect a different squad from the World Cup as the set of players are very much available for the Euro 2024. We believe there’s no replacement for Jordan Pickford on goal as he remains the first choice and most consistent goalkeeper for the Three Lions, Aaron Ramsdale has been on the bench at Arsenal for far too long.
The duo of Manchester City’s defense, Kyle Walker and John Stones will lead Southgate’s defense line, with Kieran Trippier also assisting at right-back. Reece James will watch from the stands as he is fresh off a long injury. The Young stars have the England Midfield in a chokehold with Declan Rice, Trent Alexander Arnold, Conor Gallagher, and Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo leading the midfield, there’s no telling what these boys can do with the ball on their feet.
England is lost for forwards as they have a pool of amazing forwards to choose from, we are too confident of Harry Kane at the center forward, Bukayo Saka at the wing, premier league player of the season Phil Foden, the ravishing Cole Palmer, champions League winner Jude Bellingham and Manchester City’s Jack Grealish amongst many other forwards like Ivan Toney, James Maddison, Olie Watkins, Jarod Bowen.
Who are the opponents?
The Three Lions will play their first match of the tournament on 16 June against Serbia, a strong team. The Serbians are quite strong offensively especially with big names like Luka Jovic, Milinkovic-Savic, and Alexandre Mitrovic upfront.
England will then take on a familiar opponent in the Euro, Denmark on June 20. Kasper Hjulmand's squad reached the semifinals of the Euro 2020 where England knocked them out in extra time, it was Kane who converted a penalty from the spot in the 104 minute to give England the win.
The Three Lions will finally play their last group-stage game against Slovenia on the 26th of June. England beat Slovenia in a final group stage game at the 2010 World Cup to reach the knockout stage.
Expert Betting Tips
England has an exceptional team and with these players having achieved great success in their clubs this year, we should expect a formidable England squad at the Euros. Southgate still faces criticism for his final Euro 2020 loss to Italy at Wembley but he has more sophisticated players now and we can confidently tip England to get to the semis. England will have an easy run in the group stage as the only team that appears to pose any threat to them is Denmark which they also have a good record against.
England will finish top of Group C with the most goals scored in the Group. With these amazing players in sensational scoring form, we can expect two goals per game in all of England's group-stage games. For whatever it is worth, we believe England will get a goal in all their group-stage games.
