Maribor vs Sheriff Prediction: Slovenian champion will be closer to success

The multiple Slovenian champions have finished last in the group stage of Europe's premier football competition on all three occasions. The last time Maribor qualified for the Champions League group stage was in the 2017/18 season, they lost twice to Liverpool, drew and lost to Sevilla and drew twice with Spartak.

This season's Champions League campaign has begun with a clash with Shakhtar. Maribor failed to defeat the Belarusian champions on home soil (0:0), but won 2:0 away.

While Maribor has repeatedly taken part in the Champions League group stage, Sheriff had a real breakthrough last season. The team not only entered the group stage for the first time in its history, but also took third place there, beating Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu and beating Shakhtar Donetsk in the standings. In the new season, though, Sheriff already started with a new head coach, Stjepan Tomas.

In the first round of qualification, the club from Tiraspol overcame the champion of Bosnia and Herzegovina Zrinjski Mostar (0:0 away and 1:0 at home).

Expert Betting Tips

Sheriff's success in the last UEFA Champions League campaign is due to Yuri Vernidub, a very talented football coach. However, it is unlikely that the Tiraspol side will succeed a second time in a row under another coach, former Rubin Kazan defender Stjepan Tomas. Maribor is an experienced team, which already in the first game at home can create a comfortable margin before the return game.
