On Saturday's 31st round of the Italian Championship, Sampdoria will face La Spezia to complete one of the season's most important games of the second half. The winner will most likely retain their Serie A title for next season.

If they lose the upcoming game to La Spezia, the Genoese will almost lose their chances of staying in the elite. They are 10 points behind the 17th place in the standings. A win against La Spezia will reduce their handicap to seven points.
Last week, Sampdoria faced Lecce away and played a rather weak game. They conceded a goal midway through the first half and were on the verge of losing, but they got back into the game midway through the second half thanks to a superb strike by Xesu. Sampdoria took a vital point (1:1), although it was more likely their opponents who gave it to the Genoa side.
Spezia
The position of the Eagles is getting worse and worse. After a surprise 2:1 home win over Inter, they have only picked up two points from four rounds. First, La Spezia lost to Sassuolo (0:1) on the road, then drew with the same score of 1:1 against Salernitana and Fiorentina, and in the last round, without any chance of success, lost on home ground to Lazio (0:3). There is now only three points between La Spezia and the relegation zone and - considering the excellent form of FC Verona - the relegation is a realistic possibility.

Sampdoria has won just one of their 15th league match on home soil this season. La Spezia is not a winning side but has won two of their 14 away matches in this league. And, frankly, the Eagles' chances of picking up points in Genoa look pretty good. Sampdoria has been dismal in almost every game, while La Spezia has managed to beat Inter in their last five and snatch points from eventual Conference League winner Fiorentina. The experience of the head coach, Leonardo Semplicci, may be an additional factor in the Eagles' favor here - he survived several consecutive seasons in Serie A with modest Ferrara SPAL. At the same time, Dejan Stankovic does not yet look at all promising.
