FSV Mainz 05 vs FC Augsburg Prediction, Betting Tips & Odds │17 FEBRUARY, 2024

In round 22 of the German Bundesliga, Augsburg takes on the relegation-threatened Mainz 05 at Mewa Arena on Saturday. Mainz 05 lost 3-1 to Stuttgart at MHP Arena on Sunday, continuing their poor run of form at the bottom of the Bundesliga standings.

The Rhineland-Palatinate team's current league winless streak is at 11 games. Since their 4th November 2-0 triumph over RB Leipzig, they have lost five and drawn six of their last six games. Mainz is now nine points from safety in the Bundesliga standings with 21 points from 21 games played. They are only one goal above the bottom-seeking Darmstadt on goal differential.

Conversely, Augsburg produced a strong collective performance the last time out, coming back from behind to force a 2-2 draw at home against Leipzig. But since the first week of December, Jess Thorup's team has lost four games and drawn three in their past eight league games, failing to win seven of them.

Augsburg is presently tied for 11th position in the Bundesliga standings with Wolfsburg in 12th place after 21 games played and 23 points earned.

With just 12 points from their first 21 league games this season, Mainz has drastically fallen from glory after finishing the 2022–23 campaign just four points shy of the European qualifying slots. Mainz have only won one league game thus far, drawing nine and losing eleven. This is the poorest start to a top-flight season since Schalke's bottom-of-the-table finish in 2020–21.

Two managers have already been fired as a result of their bad play this season; Jan Siewert was fired by the team last week after taking over for his predecessor Bo Svensson after just 12 games.

Bo Henriksen, who was formerly employed by FC Zurich for two years, has been put in charge of leading the team from Rheinhessen to safety after the season this coming weekend. But history is undoubtedly not in the new manager's favour; only Augsburg in 2012–13 was able to close such a significant deficit to safety in the second half of a Bundesliga season.

Augsburg will go into this match comfortably positioned in the mid-table and 11 points ahead of their rivals and the dotted line, having only avoided relegation from the German top flight the previous season. Even said, it is important to note that Augsburg is still one point worse off with 23 points after 21 league games than they were at the same time in the previous season, despite their better league standing.

After a valiant effort against the Bulls resulted in a 2-2 tie, Fuggerstadter managed to collect a point and move up to fifth position in the league rankings, where they will now play Mainz.

With a strong record against this opponent—they have defeated them more times than any other club in the top flight (12 times) and scored in each of their past 13 Bundesliga games—the longest scoring run against any team—Jess Thorup's team will be buzzing going into this match.

Furthermore, after winning 2-1 at Borussia Monchengladbach in January and a thrilling 1-1 draw with Bochum at the beginning of this month, Augsburg is still unbeaten on the road this year.

Mainz has performed dreadfully this season and, barring a significant improvement in the second half of the league campaign, is headed for relegation. There have been a total of 18 goals scored in the past five encounters between Mainz and Augsburg, so we expect another close game at Mewa Arena. But it's hard to argue much for them in this one given that they have only won once in 21 games thus far.

There have been a total of 18 goals scored in the past five encounters between Mainz and Augsburg, so we expect another close game at Mewa Arena.

The game could end in a draw or a win for Augsburg with a score line of 1 - 2 or 2 - 2.
