After only overseeing 12 matches, Beale was dismissed from his role in the Sunderland dugout following two away losses to struggling teams. Subsequently, Sunderland finds themselves seven points away from the playoff spots. It remains to be seen if the team can improve under interim head coach Michael Dodds. Prior to Beale's tenure, Sunderland had already shown signs of improvement with victories over West Bromwich Albion, Leeds United, Stoke City, and Plymouth Argyle at their home ground.
