Plymouth Argyle form
Newly-appointed head coach Russell Martin has had to face the ongoing speculation surrounding some of the key players in the club. However, he has remained realistic about Southampton's start to the season. Despite this, Martin has set high goals and achieving four points from matches against Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich City can be seen as a positive outcome. This is especially true considering that they were behind three times in their recent game against Norwich City but managed to secure a draw through a last-minute penalty.
With Romeo Lavia and James Ward-Prowse leaving St Mary's, Martin hopes to receive some of the funds generated to strengthen his midfield options. Depending on how Southampton perform against their fellow South Coast side, Martin may feel that they need more than just additional midfield alternatives to stay competitive in this league.
Plymouth Argyle Predicted Lineup
Hazard; Edwards, Scarr, Gibson, Earley; Wright, Houghton, Randell; Whittaker, Hardie, Mumba
Southampton form
Despite making some smart signings in the summer transfer window, Plymouth's ability to integrate these new additions and enhance their League One-winning team from last season was uncertain. Steven Schumacher must have been pleased with his team's performances so far, earning four points from matches against Huddersfield Town and Watford. The impressive clean sheet at Vicarage Road was just as satisfying as the preceding 3-1 victory over Huddersfield, setting the foundation for a season free from relegation concerns. Nevertheless, Schumacher will emphasize to his players the importance of not becoming complacent at this early stage, urging them to take advantage of their current momentum. The last time these two teams faced each other in a competitive game was during the 2010-2011 League One season, when Southampton secured a 3-1 win on the road.
Southampton Predicted Lineup
Bazunu; Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Stephens, Manning; Alcaraz, Charles, S Armstrong; Tella, Adams, and A. Armstrong
