The League of Legends eSports World Championship playoffs will continue from Sunday to Monday, October 30-31. In the second semifinal match, the two Korean teams, Gen.G Esports and DRX, will face each other.
World Championship 2022 is the year's main tournament in the cybersports discipline League of Legends. The 2022 edition of the premier international LAN tournament takes place in the US and Mexico and features 24 teams from around the world. The tournament will run from September 29 to November 05, 2022, with a prize pool of $2,225,000.

Gen.G Esports narrowly defeated another Korean team, DAMWON Gaming, 3-2 in the quarterfinals, but hardly expected to see another Korean team, DRX, in the semifinals. Summer Split champion LCK was denied a rematch with EDward Gaming in the Worlds 2022 semifinals, but compatriots from DRX are much easier, although the fourth Korean team continues to surprise.
Gen.G Esports, sometimes abbreviated Gen.G, (formerly known as KSV eSports), is a cybersports organization ranked 6th on Forbes' list of the world's richest cybersports companies in 2020. Gen.G Esports has started to produce acceptable results since 2020. On the international stage, I will only highlight last year's World Championship 2021, where the team finished 3-4th, losing in the most frustrating match of the semifinal series to future champion EDward Gaming (2-3).
The Gen.G Esports team is having its best season yet. The team finished second in the LCK Spring 2022 split, losing to T1 (1-3) in the final, preventing this Korean squad from competing at their home MSI. The LCK Summer 2022 split brought the first LCK championship to Gen.G Esports and a direct inevitability into the group stage of the World Championship 2022.
In the group stage, Gen.G Esports experienced no problems. They lost once to RNG at the start but never lost a series, winning the tiebreak against RNG and finishing in first place in their group.
DRX: No more sensations to come
The DRX Koreans were the real sensation in this World Cup quarterfinal. They had a formidable opponent - the reigning world champions, the Chinese EDward Gaming. No one was betting on the success of the fourth Korean team DRX, especially when they started to lose 0-2 as the BO5 series progressed. But the Koreans from this team showed another miracle, winning three maps in a row and knocking last year's champions out of the tournament. But now the game comes up against the reigning champion of their regional championship, which is even tougher.
The DRX team has been quite successful in the Korean championship, which means they have regularly played in international tournaments. Having re-named its roster, the team participated in the MSI and World Championship series tournaments in 2020. All last year was a flop for the organization.
The 2022 season was also supposed to be a failure for DRX, as the team finished fifth in the LCK Spring Split and sixth in the Summer Split. A World Championship appearance was out of the question. Still, the players of this team became the main sensation of the regional finals in the mini-tournament, where they played for two extra tickets to the World Championship 2022.
With the lowest point standings, DRX started at the lower bracket with no margin for error, and their first opponent was KT Rolster (3-2). The game was close, but their opponent was leading the series 2-1 and was a step away from making it through, but the DRX players managed to bounce back and storm into the next round, where the last World Cup slot was up for grabs. The next opponent was SANDBOX Gaming (3-2), and the situation repeated itself - the opponent led 2-1 on maps, but the final victory went to the nominal outsiders from DRX.
Reaching the World Championship 2022 is a big success for DRX, but let's face it, they are far from being the tournament's favorites, but they still need to qualify for the Play-In to the quarterfinals. The DRX team finished the very first stage of this Worlds the best, even beating the RNG team, which surprised many experts.
In the group stage, the Korean team got into a meat grinder, where they were stronger than the Chinese team Top Esports, not letting them into the playoffs and the Europeans Rogue. The DRX's performance at this World Cup is commendable!
