The International 2022
Group Stage
Fnatic vs beastcoast
Format: BO2
16.10.2022 09:00 (UTC+3)
From October 15 to 30, Singapore will host The International 11. At the biggest eSports tournament of the year, twenty teams will battle for the right to raise Aegis over their heads. Teams have been coming to this event throughout the year, participating in regional DPC leagues and majors, so only the strongest representatives from their locations have come to Singapore. But only one group of five players would make their dream come true and write their names in the history of The International tournaments.
Fnatic and beastcoast will meet in the middle of the group series. Will any of the teams be able to get two valuable points? Or will the teams play a draw?

For a team from Southeast Asia, the very act of qualifying for The International could make for a documentary in its own right. After the Arlington Major, Fnatic was 0.05 points behind in the DPC rankings, but due to re-calculations by Valve, they moved up to 12th place and won their last trip to TI11. The organization manager probably still can't believe that outcome.
It's hard to judge the team's results. At the PGL Arlinghton Major 2022, the team consisted of half of Team SoloMid FTX players. In the regular DPC leagues it was consistently regarded as a favorite and got a slot in the major, but the level of competition in the region allowed it to do so at half its potential. However, at the first major in 2022 in Stockholm, the team made it to the top-8. And at ESL One Malaysia 2022 they even made it to the top of the playoffs and made it to the top-4.
On the first day, the Southeast Asian team won only one map out of four. The team averages just 14 kills per game, which is extremely low. Fnatic has so far shown the narrowest pool of heroes in drafts. It's likely that Jabz doesn't have enough opportunities in picks, and in a series against an equal opponent they won't be able to surprise with a unique strategy. However, if the team is to reach at least the lower bracket playoffs, this is the series where they have to cling to points. At least that's what they should be doing.
Beastcoast, reaching gold is tough
The Peruvian five players boast only one record – this roster has not changed since mid-2019. The players were successful as part of Infamous at TI9, finishing in 7th-8th place, and have been fighting side by side for a trip to the majors since then. The lack of real competition in South America allows them to achieve their goals, but the team always stays close to the top teams at PGL tournaments as well. In both Stockholm and Arlington, beastcoast played poorly in the group, but made it to the top 6 in the bottom set.
The permanent bane against the South Americans should be Wraith King. On him, K1 cut in both 2019 and 2022 with an insane 66% win rate. At the PGL Arlinghton Major 2022, the beastcoast did well to farm experience and gold, on par with Team Spirit. Compared to games three years ago, the team is more organized, no longer making silly mistakes in crucial games. But the problem of meetings in the group remains unsolved.
In the first two series, beastcoast also managed to score only one point, defeating Entity Gaming in the second map. The single success was more due to the European team's lack of late-game potential than to the Peruvian team's good play. They are capable of making pick-offs in the mid-game, but if things didn't go according to plan, creating space for K1 doesn't work. The beastcoast carry so far is playing with a supporter stat: 1.88 KDA, 260 creeps per map, and only 4.25 kills on average.
Lining problems have caused the team to score the worst gold (less than 1,900 GPM). Even if we keep in mind that they had to play against the powerful Entity Gaming and Team Secret on the first day, such a figure indicates problems with the distribution of farming on the map. And it is in the series against Fnatic that the South American team has the opportunity to fix all the mistakes, as before to play with hard-cores in the draft and earn at least a point in a face-off.
