After failing to reach the knockout stages in the previous season, the Chennai Super Kings have made a strong comeback this time around. Winning five of their eight matches so far, they are comfortably in the top four of the Indian Premier League standings.
One of the biggest strengths for the Super Kings this season has been their top-order batting. Devon Conway has been the standout performer, scoring four consecutive half-centuries and leading the team in runs. While his strike rate has been an issue, his consistency has been impressive enough to keep him in the team.
Ruturaj Gaikwad has also been in fine form at the top of the order, providing quick starts to the innings. In fact, he is arguably only second to Yashasvi Jaiswal in starting off quickly.
In the middle order, Shivam Dube and Ajinkya Rahane have been solid performers, used as enforcers by captain MS Dhoni. While Rahane is more comfortable against pace, Dube takes down spin with ease.
Ambati Rayudu has struggled to find form, but with all-rounders Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja, as well as the skipper himself, the team has depth in batting and can afford to be ultra-aggressive throughout the innings, prioritizing strike rate over consistency.
In terms of bowling, Tushar Deshpande has been the joint-highest wicket-taker of the season with 14 wickets, although he has been expensive, conceding close to 11 runs per over. He is expected to be joined by Matheesha Pathirana in the new ball attack.
The spinners, Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali have also done a decent job, taking 18 wickets between them. With the pitch at Chepauk offering assistance to spinners, they could play a crucial role in upcoming matches.
Chennai Super Kings Predicted Lineup
Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Ajinkya Rahane, Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Matheesha Pathirana, Tushar Deshpande, Akash Singh, Maheesh Theekshana
Punjab Kings
The Punjab Kings must be feeling let down after their last match, where they were defeated by the Lucknow Super Giants by 56 runs. As a result of this loss, they have slipped to the lower half of the points table. The Super Giants' batters put up a great performance at the Mohali Stadium, leading to the second-highest team total in IPL history, and the Punjab Kings' bowlers had a tough time.
Although Rahul Chahar was the most economical bowler, he did not take any wickets. Meanwhile, Kagiso Rabada, Arshdeep Singh, and Sam Curran had economy rates of over 12.5. Arshdeep has picked up 14 wickets this season, but the other bowlers have failed to support him. While Rabada is back in the squad after missing a few matches, his last performance was subpar.
The spinners, Rahul Chahar and Harpreet Singh have also struggled to take wickets. This bowling attack does not seem to be strong enough to face a formidable CSK batting lineup.
Shikhar Dhawan has returned from injury and will open with Prabhsimran Singh, but their approach worries us. Prabhsimran Singh appears to be too reckless, while Dhawan can be too slow. Atharva Taide will bat at number 3, and the middle order, including Liam Livingstone, Sikandar Raza, Sam Curran, and Jitesh Sharma, must take on a larger role.
Punjab Kings Predicted Lineup
Atharva Taide, Shikhar Dhawan (c), Prabhsimran Singh, Sikandar Raza, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Shahrukh Khan, Kagiso Rabada, Rahul Chahar, Arshdeep Singh

Although the Chepauk stadium pitch has seen some high-scoring matches previously, the recent match showed a slowing down of the pitch making batting a bit more challenging. The forecast for Sunday indicates overcast weather with some rain which may assist the seam bowlers to produce some swing. The wicket has shown a two-paced nature, requiring the batsmen to adjust and settle in before playing the big shots. The temperature is likely to be above 30 degrees with high humidity. We expect CSK to win the game with their history at home.
