The Finnish team won three out of five matches at the initial stage of EuroBasket. They could have won more, but in their first game they failed to defeat Israel in overtime, 87-89 (79-79). Finland suffered another loss against Serbia, 70-100. The Finns defeated Poland (89-59), Czech Republic (98-88), and Netherlands (88-67).

Croatia doesn't look like a contender
Finland's quality performance in the group stage is largely a surprise. The same as Croatia's poor start to EuroBasket play was a surprise. The Croatians lost to Greece (85-89) and Italy (76-81), crushed Great Britain (86-65), and only with great difficulty dealt with Estonia (73-70) and Ukraine (90-85). Damir Mulaomerovic's team made it to the playoffs from third place, and, of course, in a much less confident fashion than might have been expected.
