In an interview with La Stampa, James Fitzgerald, a representative of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), outlined the organization's stance regarding Jannik Sinner, the Italian tennis player currently ranked number one in the ATP rankings.
Sinner, 23, who is a 3-time Grand Slam winner and the champion of ATP Finals 2024 had two positive tests for anabolic steroid clostebol in March 2024. However, he did not face a long suspension because there was no proof for intentional use of a prohibited substance.
We believe that the conclusion of 'no fault or negligence' was not correct according to current standards, and we ask for a suspension period of between one and two years. Wada is not asking for the cancellation of any findings, except those already imposed in the first instance.
The Sinner case hearing at CAS in Lausanne, Switzerland, will take place on April 16, 2025, and is scheduled to be between April 16 and 17. The hearing will be closed to the public.
On January 27, while speaking to his ATP press service after winning the 2025 Australian Open, Sinner told the ATP’s press service that he tries not to think about the doping case, expressing that things looked “pretty optimistic” for him at this time.
