Rare Tennis Event Repeats at Miami Masters

Four tennis players who reached the semifinals at the previous Masters tournament lost their opening matches at the next ATP-1000 event. It has happened only twice since 1990 when the current tournament format was introduced.

This event last happened in 2022 when the semifinals of the Masters in Montreal saw the participants exit the tournament in Cincinnati after their opening matches, according to OptaAce.

At the start of the tournament in Miami, Holger Rune, the Danish finalist of Indian Wells, lost his first match to American Reilly Opelka.

Defending champion from the previous Masters, British player Jack Draper, was defeated by Czech player Jakub Menšik. Russian Daniil Medvedev was unable to secure a victory against Spanish player Jaume Munar, while Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz lost to Belgian David Goffin.
