The eighth-ranked ATP player, Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev, addressed the disqualification of world ranking leader, Italian Jannik Sinner, during a Univers Tennis press conference related to a doping scandal.
It became known on February 15 that the 23-year-old Sinner had reached an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for an immediate three-month ban on competing due to two positive tests for the steroid clostebol. This measure against the winner of 19 ATP singles tournaments will be in effect until May 4, 2025, although Sinner will be allowed to return to training starting April 13.
I hope this creates a precedent where everyone can defend themselves because it would be strange if that were not possible. I imagine Sinner had a discussion with WADA to achieve this result. Next time, players will be able to discuss similar issues with WADA.
On February 15, it was announced that due to Sinner's suspension, his place in the main draw of the ATP-1000 tournament in Doha will be taken by Russian tennis player Roman Safiullin, who is ranked 70th in the world.
