World Chess Champion Murzin Reveals Surviving Abuse from Father

Russian grandmaster Volodar Murzin, the rapid chess world champion of 2024, recounted in an interview with Championat how he escaped from his father’s abuse when he was just 11 years old.

Volodar Murzin
I don't remember having a normal relationship with my father. His physical abuse towards everyone in the household was taken for granted. So, when the opportunity arose to escape from him, we did. I was 11 years old at the time, and just shortly before that, I had won the European Children's Championship.

It is important to note that 18-year-old Murzin won the rapid chess world championship in December 2024 in New York, clinching the title a round before the tournament ended with a total of ten points.
