Vatican Condemns Scandalous Scenes at Olympics 2024 Opening Ceremony

The Holy See's press office announced in a statement that the Vatican condemns the insults inflicted on Christians and believers of other faiths during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris.

The opening ceremony of the Games took place on July 26 on the embankment and waters of the Seine River, thus taking place outside the stadium for the first time. The event was criticized for its poor level of organization, as well as for certain scenes, in particular the The Last Supper scene from the Bible.

The text of the statement reads:

The Holy See was saddened by certain scenes during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games and can only join the voices that have been raised in recent days to deplore the offense caused to many Christians and believers of other religions. The freedom of expression, which is clearly not called into question here, is limited by respect for others.

On July 28, the press service of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) publicly apologized to those offended by the scandalous opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics.

The games in the French capital started on July 26 and will last until August 11.
