Sudanese Track Star Abubaker Kaki Killed in Shelling

Sudanese middle-distance runner Abubaker Kaki Khamis has been killed in an artillery strike, as reported by Sudafax. He was 35 years old.

According to the report, Kaki died when a shell hit his home in El Fasher. The explosion killed the athlete instantly and injured several members of his family.

Sudan has been engulfed in a civil armed conflict since 2023, with ongoing violence affecting numerous regions of the country.

Abubaker Kaki was a two-time World Indoor Champion in the 800 meters (2008, 2010) and a silver medalist at the 2011 World Championships.

He represented Sudan at two Olympic Games. In 2008 in Beijing, he failed to reach the final, while in 2012 in London, he finished in seventh place.
