On October 6, a tragedy occurred at the IRONMAN international triathlon tournament in Barcelona, Spain, where a Russian athlete drowned during the swimming segment of the event.
According to Mundo Deportivo, shortly after the swim began, the body of the 41-year-old participant was discovered in the water. Medical crews on the shore attempted to resuscitate the athlete; however, she passed away on the way to the hospital in an ambulance. An investigation initiated by the Spanish police has found preliminary results indicating that the athlete's death was an accident.
The IRONMAN tournament organizers have already expressed their condolences to the family and friends of the athlete.
The competition included three stages: a 3,800-meter swim in the Mediterranean Sea, a 180.25-kilometer bike ride on the highway, and a marathon run of 42.195 kilometers.
