The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has revealed changes to the program for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The new schedule already includes these updates.
One of the key changes is an increase in the number of women's teams in the football tournament to 16, surpassing the 12 men's teams. Additionally, a new women's weight category has been added in boxing to balance the quotas for both genders, and two women's teams have been included in water polo.
Mixed formats will feature more prominently across competitions, with a mixed 4x100 meter relay added in athletics, along with similar events in archery, golf, gymnastics, and table tennis. In rowing, there will be a mixed beach sprint, where competitors will race on both sand and water.
Furthermore, the basketball 3x3 tournament will see an expansion, raising the number of teams for both men and women from 8 to 12. Medals will now be contested in separate disciplines in sport climbing, and swimming will include 50-meter races of the four strokes.
On March 20, it was announced that 41-year-old Kirsty Coventry from Zimbabwe will succeed Thomas Bach as IOC president starting June 24.
