
Italian speed skater Davide Ghiotto has won the 10,000-meter race at the third stage of the World Cup in Calgary, Canada.
The 31-year-old Ghiotto completed the distance in 12 minutes 25.69 seconds, setting a new world record for this distance. He surpassed the previous record held by Swedish skater Nils van der Poel, who had a time of 12 minutes 30.74 seconds.
Czech skater Metoděj Jílek took second place, finishing with a time that was 12.12 seconds slower than Ghiotto's. In third place was Norway's Sander Eitrem, who finished 12.35 seconds behind.
Ghiotto is a bronze medalist from the Olympics, a three-time world champion, and a seven-time national champion of Italy.
