The Coalition for Fair Gambling (CFG) has revealed the amount of illegal betting that took place during the March Madness men's and women's college basketball tournaments.
The tournament is one of the largest sporting events in the U.S., featuring 68 college teams from across the country in a single-elimination format.
According to the CFG report, the volume of illegal bets on tournament games reached $4.3 billion in 2024, while legal bets attracted only $2.4 billion.
Recall that sports betting is now legal in 38 U.S. states and Washington, D.C. However, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) expresses concern that players are seen by organized crime and professional gamblers as easy targets to obtain inside information or influence the outcome of a game.
