American Gymnast Chiles Challenges CAS Decision on Losing Olympic Bronze

Jordan Chiles, the silver medalist from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, has filed an appeal with the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland against the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruling that stripped her of her medal.

To recap, the 23-year-old athlete was deprived of the bronze medal from the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris following the results of the floor exercise. The original bronze medalist was Romanian Ana Maria Bărbosu, who received a score of 13.700 (Chiles scored 13.666). However, U.S. team representatives lodged an appeal to review their athlete's scores, successfully securing a bronze medal for Chiles.

After the Romanian National Olympic Committee (NOC) appealed, CAS reviewed the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) technical committee's decision and ruled that the American appeal was filed four seconds late, beyond the prescribed time limit.

According to Reuters, citing a press release from the law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLC., Chiles’ lawyers indicated that CAS refused to consider video evidence allegedly showing that the appeal was submitted on time. They also noted a conflict of interest regarding the commission's president, Hamid Gharavi, who acted as an attorney for the Romanian side during arbitration.

The champion in this discipline was Brazilian Rebeca Andrade with a score of 14.666, while the silver went to seven-time Olympic champion Simone Biles from the USA, who scored 14.133.
