UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev said that he wants to see Colby Covington win against Leon Edwards, as he wants to fight him for the second championship belt.
Makhachev's next fight will take place on October 21 at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi. His opponent will be the former champion of the division Brazilian Charles Oliveira.
ESPN quotes Makhachev as saying:
I hope [Covington] wins, because I don't know what Leon says about [fighting me]. I've never heard Leon say he wants this fight. But Colby wants it. That's why I want Colby to win and we can meet one day. It's going to be U.S. wrestling vs. Dagestan wrestling. I don't know what the UFC has planned, but my dream fight is for the second belt.
The fight between Leon Edwards and Colby Covington is scheduled to take place on December 17 at UFC 296.
Makhachev defeated Alexander Volkanovski by unanimous decision at UFC 284 this past February. Islam has 24 wins and one loss on his record. Oliveira defeated Beneil Dariush by technical knockout in the first round at UFC 289 this June. Charles has 34 wins and nine losses.
